“It sounds as if you are trying to tell me that there is a menacing giant out among those waters without actually saying the words because you know it will sound farfetched upon my ears. Is that what you are trying to do Mr. Anderson? Are you trying to make me believe in a fairy tale without telling me what it is?” Huntley asked.

“No sir, it is just a hard thing to describe. I find myself gripped in fear when I bring its image to mind and it still overwhelms me. It is giant as you suggested, but it is not so benign as a giant that we all heard stories about as children. It is a monstrous abomination that may date back to when the world was being formed. The first I know of such a thing being mentioned is in an ancient Greek tale, but I am no scholar on such things, so it may have appeared in writings long before then. The thing that awaits us and was holding my captain and the crew captive when I left them is called Cetus. The little man that was stranded on that small island could not recall what it was named so he affixed the title Goliath to the creature, because Goliath was the largest and most fearsome thing he had ever known of. What awaits us is not a large man that can be slain with any stone flung from a sling.”

“What lies in those waters and waits for opportunities to rain destruction and death upon all that venture near to it is an immense beast of a thing. I have told you of its height and I assure you I did not allow my fears to exaggerate the immensity of this thing. If anything, I have not given its size the credit it is due. It is more dragon or serpent like than any other thing I could compare it to, but it has arms and legs with enormous claws that clack when he flexes them. These claws rip board from beam as easily as you or I might scratch a fleck of dried mud from our skin. His body is covered in scaly armor from head to where I could no longer see because of the water. Heavy plates of ancient callouses that are so dark a green that they appear as black as the most stagnant pond. In the crevices of the plates hang tendrils of ocean vegetation. Yards long these vines hang from him and he wears them as he might a robe, or perhaps he does not even know they are upon him. I have not ruled out the notion that he is so ancient that perhaps he has not snagged these ropey growths with his scaly hide, but instead they are growing upon him and is becoming additional raiment. But it is its mouth that makes me want to flee to the other side of the world if I could do as I wanted instead of what I must.
